Professional Development Report to College Council on 3-15-07 -FrontPage
1. Classroom Management - a number of faculty have expressed interest in a workshop on Classroom Management including issues of discipline and cheating/plagiarism. The workshop is planned for Friday, April 20 - 9-12. We have contacted L.A. City College, and the SLO Coordinator is being contacted to see if they can provide the workshop for us. More details to follow
2. Tech Ed 2007 - 23 staff and faculty have signed up for Tech Ed Conference in Ontario. Professional Development has negotiated a one time fee of $1500 for Mission College for any and all staff and faculty to attend the conference. This is the second year that Professional Development has negotiated such a reduction in fees.
3. Video Conference in Las Vegas - The Committee has approved a conference request from Terry Carter to attend a video conference in Las Vegas. The Learning Systems User Group - http://www.lms2007.com/content/ . Terry will return with the newest video technology and help to implement it in the Multimedia classrooms and other classrooms on campus.
4. Title V - Multimedia Workshops - Deborah Paulsen is planning Title V Faculty/Staff Training as follows: Monday April 16 and 23 - Powerpoint - 1:30 -3:30 pm LRC 233,
Weds, May 2 and 9, Photoshop - 1:30 - 3:30 pm LRC 233, Tuesday, May 8 and 15, Web Design, 1:30 - 2:30 pm LRC 233.
5. Brown Bag Lunch - "Tricks of the Trade: Trading Teaching Tips" - by Mickey Hong, Prof. Development Coordinator - LACC - Tuesday, 4/24/07 12-1 pm, CC#4 - Special thanks to Sandi Lampert for planning and organizing this valuable activity. see Flyer for Teaching Tips
6. New form for Request for Staff Development Funds - A new form has been developed for faculty and staff to request the new Staff Development Funds ($25,000 approved by Gov. Schwarzenneger). The form requires the request to include which one of the activities of the 9 following activities are the focus of the request:
1) Improvement of teaching.
(2) Maintenance of current academic and technical knowledge and skills.
(3) In-service training for vocational education and employment preparation programs.
(4) Retraining to meet changing institutional needs.
(5) Intersegmental exchange programs.
(6) Development of innovations in instructional and administrative techniques and program effectiveness.
(7) Computer and technological proficiency programs.
(8) Courses and training implementing equal employment opportunity and upward mobility programs.
(9) Programs designed to develop self-esteem.
Also each request requires a statement of how the fund request further or advances student success and will effectively reach students in the classroom.
7. Math workshop on Classroom Presentation Skills - Debby Wong and David Jordan are jointly planning a Math workshop for the Spring semester which will assist Math faculty to improve their classroom presentations, including the use of videos, and training in "projection of voice clarity, use of vocal variety (pitch, pace, and dynamics), stressing of key words, and concepts through speech, and gesture and development of personal style while learning to avoid distracting physical mannerisms.
