We have a strong new faculty orientation which includes a full day "nuts and bolts" session which includes critical first week information as well as mission/vision/shared governance-collegial consultation processes. on the day prior to our campus inservice day, then a series (Friday afternoons) which include the following topics:
Campus tour
Campus Communication Systems (total use of Outlook, voice/phone system, emergency communications)
Learning Styles/Teaching Strategies
Student Learning Outcomes
Classroom Assessment Techniques
Campus Policy/Procedure, including curriculum processes
Blackboard - Course Management System
Evaluation and the Tenure processes
The culmination of the New Faculty Orientation is a 3 day Great Teachers' Retreat. At the retreat, our new faculty have guaranteed reservations. We fill remaining spaces with faculty requesting the oppportunity to participate from our more seasoned and adjunct faculty pool.
During the 2nd semester, informal discussions on topics of teaching/learning occur in a "brown-bag" format. We never know for sure where the conversation will go, but it is always interesting!
